So if you guys didn’t know my husband is half Mexican and half El Salvadorian. Being born in Houston and growing up around great El Salvadorian food, him and his Dad have been on the hunt for a place that matches up here in Colorado. As you can imagine we were delighted to hear a restaurant was coming to the Springs and it has been on our list to try ever since. We finally got around to trying it with a group of other food bloggers which was super fun! We were joined by Dionne who runs Rocky Mountain Food Report, Kayla from CO Springs Foodies, and Kristen from Acclivity Media. We had the best time with these gals and their families and can’t wait to do a group outing again!
Now this place is the real deal food wise. The owner lived 25 years in El Salvador so her restaurant is very authentic. The food is fresh and all locally sourced down to even the oil she cooks her food in. She is very passionate about supporting local which we love. Her space is also beautifully done, she has a huge outdoor patio that is connected to her building and it has large garage doors that create an open concept feel. We truly loved the atmosphere she created and it made our experience wonderful.
When it came to ordering, you order at the counter and food is brought to you. We chose to order the special of the day, a chile relleno plate and a three pupusa plate. Now I should probably explain what a pupusa is for those of you that have never had one. It is a traditional El Salvadorian dish of a thick corn tortilla that is stuffed with a savory filling. Some popular fillings are beans, cheese and pork. Another which is one of my favorites is cheese and loroco (an edible flower that tastes kind of like okra). Monse’s pupusas are very authentic and have a great taste. I truly enjoyed my food and thought it was some of the best pupusas I have ever had. My chile relleno was also outstanding. This girl has got it going on with her restaurant and food and this is definitely one my favorite places we have visited thus far.
You can visit her in Old Colorado City off of Colorado and 25th Street. It is the perfect summer outing with her patio and she said there is talk about doing salsa nights and buffet style food! We can’t wait to be back for a dance lesson soon!
